Why is a Child Safeguarding Policy important?

Since its introduction in 1989, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has become the most widely ratified treaty in the world. China has also ratified the treaty, and therefore the HKSAR government has the responsibility to comply with the Convention and protect the rights of children. Apart from the government, can corporates and other organisations take part in child safeguarding?

Just like governments would enact laws to protect citizens’ safety and properties, any organisations that are involved in taking care of children should have a Child Safeguarding Policy for their employees to follow. There are benefits for the staff of an organisation to follow unified standards and practices:

1. Children would be more emotionally stable

Following the “children-first” principle means providing the greatest protection to children. If the staff create a happy and safe environment for the children to learn or thrive, the children will become more emotionally stable and positive, which is crucial to their healthy development.

2. Children would be more focused in learning

Inconsistent instructions from teaching staff will make a child confused and disoriented. Instead, a stable environment can help children to focus on learning.

3. Parents would feel relieved

An organisation with a Child Safeguarding Policy in place and suitable training for all frontline staff gives parents the confidence to put their children in its education or care service.

4. Staff are protected

Taking care of and designing activities for children are among the daily work of many staff. A Child Safeguarding Policy and related training can help the staff work out their plans according to the “children-first” principle, rather than expediency and efficiency. If the staff design activities that are both suitable and safe for the children, the staff themselves would be protected. It would also enhance their job efficiency and sense of accomplishment.

5. Building a child safeguarding culture

A policy is not complete until staff members of all levels understand and put it into practice. After establishing the Child Safeguarding Policy, the organisation should carry out regular training and experience sharing to instil the proper concepts and vision in every employee, gradually establishing a child safeguarding culture throughout the entire institution.

While we all know the legislation for child protection is important, have you ever thought of participating in safeguarding the children yourself? If all staff of an organisation espouse the same value, standard and practices, our children will be able to receive the best care and protection.
