Subduing “Handsy-saur” and “Daydream-mon” – What our parents say about the ADHD support group

Our Centre for Child Enlightenment has collaborated with Dr Kathy Shum, Assistant Professor of the Department of Psychology of The University of Hong Kong, to launch a 2-year evaluation research for a parent-child parallel group service in the name of “Jumping Beans” since September 2020. The research involved more than 100 K2 and K3 students with or at risk of attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), as well as their parents.

Ever since its launch, the programme has received a lot of positive feedbacks and recognition. Sylvia, who has completed 10 lessons together with her son, says, “My child learned of many monsters, like Handsy-saur and Chatter-fish. When we went shopping for food at the convenient store in the past, he used to touch around the shelves and I had to put effort to stop him. After a few lessons, we went shopping again but this time he had his arms folded. He said the social worker had taught him to use ‘crossed hands’ to subdue Handsy-saur. What a surprise!”

Mrs Lee says, “My son could never concentrate on homework. Sometimes he went drinking water, going to the toilet, two or three hours later he couldn’t even finish a few words. Now I just need to say ‘Here comes Daydream-mon!’ and he will immediately sit straight, take a few breaths and get focused again.” Mrs Lee has also learned about relaxing from the parent-child lessons. Now she allows her son to finish the homework himself while she does her chores.

Mr Luk, a stationing school social worker from the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, says the programme has provided a common language for the teachers and parents to assess and handle the children’s problems, making it easier to discipline them. During his home visits, he observed that the children who had completed the lessons were more concentrated when doing homework and having meals, and could finish by themselves. Their parent-child relationship also became less strained by learning to communicate and understand each other.
